In Podcast #23 the Trekkers take you to Washington, D.C., our nation’s capital.   Although not part of Virginia, this city is very important to our state’s economy since many Virginians commute to Washington, D.C. for work.  Join us as we take you on a quick tour of the most famous sites: the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, the U.S. Capitol, and the U.S. Supreme Court.  We’ll also take you to the Potomac River, review tides in the Tidal Basin, discover Greek and Roman influences in the architecture, stand on the same spot where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous speech, and take a ride on the Metro. Come on, let's go trekkin'!

Every Spring, Washington, D.C. has a special two-week long Cherry Blossom Festival.  The first 3,000 cherry trees were a gift from Japan in 1912, and since then, many more have been planted, mostly along the Tidal Basin.  Every year, thousands of tourists come to enjoy their beauty.  People actually protested the construction of the Jefferson Memorial because some of the trees had to be cut down.  However, more cherry trees were planted, and now there are plenty for everyone to enjoy.  The fun events include a Cherry Blossom parade, a Japanese street festival, a 10-mile run, a kite-flying festival, and a huge fireworks display.  If you’d like to learn more, or even attend the festival this Spring, visit the official website: http://nationalcherryblossomfestival.org

3.1 The student will explain how the contributions of ancient Greece and Rome have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, government (direct and representative democracy), and sports.


3.11 The student will explain the importance of the basic principles that form the foundation of a republican form of government by

  1. a)describing the individual rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and equality under the law;

  2. b)identifying the contributions of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, and Martin Luther King, Jr.;
